Tinubu meets with labour leaders to end NLC strike...

Image
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed, national leader of the All Progressives Congress took the unusual step Friday of intervening in the Nigeria Labour Congress protest by visiting the NLC leaders right in their secretariat in Abuja, to appeal for an end to the strike. Tinubu, accompanied by some officials of the APC and Governor Rauf Aregbesola, said he came on behalf of his party, the Buhari government to appeal to the labour leaders to end the strike and return to the negotiating table. In a move designed clearly to massage the ego of the labour leaders, since the strike was largely ignored in many parts of Nigeria, Tinubu urged Labour to employ anger management in resolving the disagreement over the fuel price increase. Tinubu explained the reason for the fuel price increase and said it was done in the best interest of Nigeria as it would allow investors to come into Nigeria to build refineries. He contrasted the policy to the step taken by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, when he

On Dino Melaye's Protest By Pius Adeshina

I don't even know how I missed this one in all the recent back and forth but I have only just heard with one ear that the Senator Representing Bukola Saraki in the Senate, His Excellency Otunba Distinguished Senator Dino Melaye, is calling for protest and offering to lead it. A people's misery, a people's weakest moment, is always a very fecund producer of opportunistic aspirant heroes and sheroes trying to embezzle such a people's legitimate struggles and triumphs. These are often prurient characters who sense an opportunity to smuggle themselves and their rottenness into nice positive corners in the people's memory. They want to b

Buhari’s anti-corruption war, any results so far?

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari recently challenged the world leaders to demonstrate the required political will to fight corruption.Speaking at London Anti-corruption Summit, he pointed out that lack of political will had been the missing link in the war against corruption.Corruption is a hydra-headed monster and a canker-worm that undermines the fabric of all societies. It does not differentiate between developed and developing countries. It constitutes a serious threat to good governance, rule of law, peace and security, as well as development programmes aimed at tackling poverty and economic backwardness.’’ A main component of this anti-corruption partnership is that governments must demonstrate the unquestionable political will and commitment to the fight. With Buhari’s achievement on fighting corruption so far, analysts observe that he has emerged one of Africa’s vibrant advocates of a corruption-free society and world leaders have acknowledged his honest credentials. For instance,
