Land grabbing is set to become a criminal offence in Lagos state as members of the State House of Assembly at its plenary yesterday July 19th, passed a bill seeking to criminalize the act. The bill which was passed after the third reading, prohibits forceful entry and illegal occupation of landed properties; violent and fraudulent conduct in relation to landed properties in Lagos State. The bill has been sent to the Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode for his assent. The Speaker of the state house of assembly, Mudashiru Obasa in his submission, stated that the passage of the bill into law will give sanction to any individual who is culpable of the offence.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has described as absurd opinions in some quarters that the anti-corruption fight of the Buhari-led government is one-sided. Osinbajo said this while speaking at the end of the African Union summit in Kigali, Rwanda on Monday July 18th. “I think it’s entirely absurd, I think that view is absurd and without foundation or basis whatsoever. We look at corruption from all possible facets. If you look at for example, corruption on the military, from military procurement, obviously the only individuals responsible for that could be persons who had held office within the period in question and that has been done and clearly the opposition was not in the office at that time. Those who were in the office were not necessarily opposition individuals. These were service chiefs and other personnel who had served for a while. The Senator representing Lagos West Senatorial District, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday, formally reported Senator Dino Melaye to the All Progressives Congress and the Senate, alleging that Melaye would have beaten her up but for the timely intervention of her colleagues. Tinubu, the wife of the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in her separate letters, said the Kogi West Senatorial District senator actually issued threats of rape and assault against her and boasted that he would face no consequence even if he fulfilled the threats. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop shielding members of his government from probe. The governor in a statement on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said it smacked of sheer hypocrisy and nepotism for anyone to accept that fraud could have been perpetrated on procurement and award of contracts in an establishment without the involvement of the director of procurement. “It is now obvious to the entire world that anyone that is in President Buhari’s good books can never be adjudged as corrupt even if such a person is caught looting the entire money in Nigeria’s treasury,” Fayose said. “There are many petitions relating to the defence from 2007 that are been discarded, the question is why? There are several petitions against APC leaders that are not being looked into, the question is why? Fighting corruption and targeting only opponents of the president is in itself corruption.
