Update On Smart City Lagos: Necessity of the time

Image
Once again, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State is blazing the trail. Recent report in Environews Nigeria including other local Nigerian daily newspapers gave prominence to the news item concerning the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Lagos State Government and Dubai authority (represented by Smart City Dubai, a company) for the creation of Africa’s first smart city, the Smart City Lagos. It was a news item with euphoria and one that gladdens the heart, in the sense that, finally, Lagos is swimming with the tidal wave of contemporary urban development instead of remaining stagnant and be left at the base of progress among other world Mega Cities. The snippets from the news item about the MOU covered the anticipated benefits: “…. it is expected to bring multi-billion-dollars investments to the city, create thousands of jobs and transform the Ibeju-Lekki axis in particular and the entire Lagos State in general.” (Steve Ayorinde, Lagos State Commissioner for Inf...

BREXIT: After initial shocks, financial markets recover

Image
— 28th June 2016 Pressure has eased on UK financial markets after two days of turmoil in the wake of the Brexit vote, with the FTSE 100 share index opening higher. In mid-morning trading, the index was up more than 2% at 6,113.03, while the FTSE 250 had gained 2.6%. The FTSE 100 lost 5.6% in the previous two trading sessions, while the more UK-focused FTSE 250 had slumped 13.7%. The pound also showed signs of recovery, rising 0.6% against the dollar to $1.3307. The pound had risen as high as $1.50 shortly before the result of the vote became clear on Friday morning. But on Monday, the currency plunged to a 31-year low against the dollar, while some share trading was temporarily halted. Also on Monday, yields on 10-year government bonds sank below 1% for the first time as investors bet on an interest rate cut. Wole Soyinka, Religion And School Uniforms

Image
Humans call God for different reasons. Some are purely altruistic while others are selfish. This explains why people like me tend to wonder whether my God is the same one others call. To some people, they see God essentially as a big, fat or old man (or woman) hence weak in need of whom to fight for Him. Others see God, as they know it as a Being that is somewhere and nowhere at the same time. They are just to “believe”, often without question(s). The questions about God are easy but made unnecessarily difficult by our very “religious” people. Just recently in his contribution to the debate on the Osun school uniform controversy, Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, penned his: “To Everything, Its Place” on SaharaReporters. As simple as the thesis of the article reads, it appears some people still struggle to understand Kongi, even though he wrote that piece in everyday English! Dr. Brimah, writing under the title: “It’s Not Too Late for Wole Soyinka to Repent”, in The Scoop...

Mother Speaks - I Was Mortified When I Saw Those Pictures

Image
Mother of the child allegedly “racially separated” at a creche in Centurion, South Africa has spoken out. The controversial photo said to be suggesting racism was leaked on social media last week. It shows a black child sitting alone at a table while six white classmates are having laughs around a table next to her, enjoying cupcakes. In the picture, the black child appears to be looking at them. Thobo Wanatsha Mosinyi told Rekord she was shocked to receive a photo of her child sitting alone from his mates at Koetjies and Kalfies Kleuterskool.  The picture was sent by Ane Muller, a teacher at the school and the daughter of owner Anel Engelbrecht. "I was mortified," said Mosinyi. "I contacted Ane and asked her if this was what my daughter goes through on a daily basis. This broke my heart and so I rushed to the school and collected my daughter." Mosinyi said Muller told her she had been scolded by her mother for sending the photograph. ...

Naira falls to 351/dollar at black market

Image
The naira fell to 351 to the United States dollar at the parallel market and slightly to 282 at the new interbank market on Monday. Following the floating of the naira and the adoption of a single structure through the interbank/autonomous window, the currency closed last week at 281 to the greenback at the official market. The President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, in an interview with our correspondent, said the naira dropped to 351 at the parallel market from between 346 and 348 due to persistent liquidity issue. He said, “Lack of liquidity in both the interbank and parallel markets is what is affecting the naira exchange rate to the dollar. “Right now, the only thing that the market is scavenging for is the export proceeds. There is a liquidity crisis.” Asked if demands have shifted away from the parallel market as a result of the new forex policy, Gwadabe said, “How can demand shift away from the parallel market when ...

Nigerian man dies during Mandela Washington Fellowship in the US

Image
The U.S. Mission to Nigeria and our colleagues in the United States were deeply saddened to learn of the death of John Paul Ojaojogwu Usman. On June 25, John Paul died due to an accident while hiking near Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he was studying civic leadership as a 2016 Mandela Washington Fellow. We extend our deepest condolences to John Paul’s family and friends over this tragic loss. John Paul was a rising star, devoted to the causes of sustainable development, children’s rights, and peacebuilding in Nigeria. His selection to the Mandela Washington Fellowship was a tribute to his drive, talent, and dedication to making his country’s civil society even stronger. One of John Paul’s professional mentors at Virginia Tech put it best, “While his time with us was short, he was well loved.” This young man will be remembered fondly as a great citizen ambassador of his country. We mourn his passing.
