A man tried to set fire to an Air France plane at Sierra Leone’s biggest airport after gaining access to the aircraft without a passport or boarding card, a court heard Tuesday.

Airport officials promised security would be stepped up after Ibrahim Kanu attempted to board the flight armed with petrol, matches and a cigarette lighter on June 24 at Lungi International Airport, close to the capital of Freetown.

The prosecution said Kanu had entered the restricted area reserved for staff and took a bus connecting to the plane, believed to have been an Airbus A330-200 headed for Paris.

Militants flee Ogun, regroup in Ondo

Some vandals allegedly responsible for attacks on communities in Lagos and Ogun states are escaping in large numbers to riverine communities in the Ilaje and Ese-Odo local government areas of Ondo State. Investigations on Monday showed that the insurgents, who escaped the intensified aerial bombardment by the Nigerian Air Force of their camps at Arepo, Ogun, and Ikorodu, Lagos, had been sighted in Ore, Okitipupa and the riverine communities of  Ondo State. A top security source told one of our correspondents that security reports showed that some of the militants had sneaked into the Ondo reverine communities. He said, ‘‘Arepo can no longer contain them. Some of them have run to Ondo to hide in the riverine areas.’’ It was further gathered that some of them were still trapped in Arepo and other communities in Lagos and were making frantic moves to flee. BUHARI DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY ON WATER, SANITATION SECTOR

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared a state of emergency on Nigeria’s water supply, sanitation and hygiene sector. In a statement by Buhari's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the president maintained that the action became imperative as it will reduce the hig prevalence of water-borne diseases in different parts of the country, which has caused preventable deaths. Buhari described statistics on open defecation, access to piped water service and sanitation as "disturbing" while committing to implement the National Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Action Plan. The statement read: "Access to piped water services which was 32% in 1990 has declined to 7% in 2015; access to improved sanitation has also decreased from 38% in 1990 to 29% in 2015.
