A ‎Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered a former Governor of Imo State, Mr. Ikedi Ohakim, to open his defence to debunk the charges of money laundering instituted against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Justice Adeniyi Ademola made this order in a ruling on Thursday after dismissing the no-case submission filed by the former governor who had claimed that the evidence led by the prosecution to prove its case had disclosed no prima facie case against him. The EFCC on July 8, 2015, arraigned Ohakim who was Imo State Governor between 2007 and 2011, on three counts of money laundering. The prosecution accused Ohakim of purchasing a property at 60, Kwame Nkrumah Street, Plot No 1098, Cadastral ZoneA04, Asokoro District, Abuja with cash payment of $2.29m which was said to be dollar equivalent of N270m in November 2008. The Lagos State Government has clarified the misconception surrounding the unfortunate incident where a street hawker was knocked down by an oncoming truck at Maryland Bus Stop on Wednesday. The street hawker, who was trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), had attempted to cross the road before being hit by the truck, which was erroneously thought to be a BRT Bus. As a result, hoodlums armed with sticks and stones, immediately descended on some BRT buses plying the route as at the time of the incident and in the process destroyed several of the BRT buses. But the Government in a statement signed the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said that contrary to the information being circulated in the social media that the street hawker was hit by a BRT bus, it was a truck belonging to a soft drink company that unfortunately hit the boy. “It wasn’t any of our buses that killed him (hawker), it was a soft drink company truc

      A street hawker lost his life yesterday afternoon while being chased by Kick Against Indiscipline officials (KAI) along Ikorodu road in Maryland. According to eyewitnesses, the KAI officials making an attempt to enforce the law, chased a man hawking along Maryland bridge. While trying to avoid them, he ran into a BRT bus and was knocked to the ground, he died instantly. Angry hawkers and area boys armed with sticks & stones immediately descended to destroy all BRT buses in the area and riot in protest. The US government's new proposal to curb terrorism involves snooping around social media accounts of foreign travelers. A legal practitioner, Mr. Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, has filed a notice at the Federal High Court in Abuja to discontinue the suit he instituted seeking the disqualification of President Muhammadu Buhari for lack of certificate. Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe had alleged that Buhari was not qualified to aspire for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because he did not sit for the Cambridge West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1961 as he claimed. The notice of discontinuance dated June 27 and obtained by THISDAY, read: “Take note that the plaintiff in this originating summons, Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, hereby discontinues this action.” THISDAY checks revealed that following the withdrawal of the suit from court, the trial judge, Justice Ademola Adeniyi will today sit and accordingly strike out the case. • NCC confirms receipt • Firm pays N18.96b for broadband licence Telecommunications firm, MTN has said it has paid additional N30 billion to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) as part of the N330 billion fine slammed on it for contravening regulatory orders in the country. The new N30 billion now increases the payment made by the South African firm on the fine till date to N80 billion, after an earlier N50 billion paid on February 24, which was done in ‘Good Faith.’ Meanwhile, NCC has confirmed receipt of the additional N30 billion from MTN. According to agreement reached by NCC and MTN earlier in the month in Abuja, MTN was expected to pay N30 billion into NCC’s Treasury Single Account (TSA) with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) 30 days from the date of the agreement dated June 10, 2016. He was appointed Foreign Minister of Nigeria on July 26, 2007 by President Umaru Yar’Adua and was made Minister of Transport by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2001. a Lebanese and bureau de change operator, Aly Sayad, has been accused of absconding with $487,700 (about N170m)  in the Victoria Island area of Lagos State. It was learnt that three businessmen had approached the suspect in his office on Idowu Taylor Street, Victoria Island, to help them change $487,700 to naira. He was alleged to have left the men in the office after collecting the money, saying he was going to the bank to transfer the naira equivalent to their various bank accounts. After waiting for hours, the victims were said to have gone to the bank where Sayad claimed he was going to do the transaction, but could not find him. He was alleged to have fled with the money. The case was reported at the Bar Beach Police Division, where a manhunt was launched for the suspect. ELEVEN men suspected to be fake naval officers have been arrested in Rivers State The suspects were said to have been parading themselves as navy personnel with different ranks before they were apprehended around the Rukpokwu Police checkpoint. The outgoing Commander NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Sanusi Ibrahim, who disclosed this on Wednesday while handing over the suspects to the Rivers Police Command, explained that they (suspects) disguised as “merchant navy” with the aim of defrauding the public and some companies in the state. Ibrahim stated that the Nigerian Air Force had earlier detected the suspects and later arrested then. The Air Force, according to Ibrahim, handed over the fake naval personnel to the Nigerian Navy. Pandemonium struck at the Ekuigbo community of Ughelli-North Local Government Area of Delta State on Wednesday after a suspected rapist was set ablaze. The suspect was reportedly among the hoodlums who attacked a 22-year-old sales girl where she sold fish feed and gang raped her into coma on Monday. Recall that the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Celestina Kalu, had confirmed the incident to DAILY POST, saying investigation into the case has begun. The PPRO had said the victim was receiving treatment at the Accident and Emergency, A&E, Unit of the Central Hospital. However, all efforts to get through to the PPRO on the new development as at press time were abortive.
