Domestic Airlines To Increase Fares...

Image
Domestic airlines in the country may increase the fares payable on air ticket following the recent hike in the price of aviation fuel, popularly known as Jet-A1. According to them, a circular informing them of the increase in the price of aviation fuel from N115 per litre to N150 was issued in Lagos last week. This is coming at a time when more foreign airlines are contemplating to halt their operations in the country following their inability to repatriate earnings to their various home countries. The domestic and foreign carriers made their challenges known to the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, during two separate meetings at the headquarters of the ministry in Abuja on Monday. Speaking on behalf of the domestic carriers, the Chairman, Airline Operators of Nigeria, Capt. Noggie Meggison, said the hike in aviation fuel price was in contrast to what was obtainable in other parts of the world, where the cost of Jet-A1 had been falling. The AON delegat...

While the court ruled that Stella could continue to enjoy the administrative bail earlier granted her by the EFCC, the judge adjourned till Wednesday to rule on the bail application for Azibaola.

Festus Keyamo -- Criticising Buhari on recovered loot is insanity

Image
Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has slammed those criticising President Muhammadu Buhari for publishing the list of recovered loot from corrupt politicians. He described the criticisms that trailed the published list of recovered loot as the height of insanity. Keyamo said those faulting the President were both friends and families of the looters or their political associates. After the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, released the details of the loot in a statement on Saturday, many Nigerians criticised the President for not naming the looters as promised on May 29. But Keyamo, in a series of tweets on his official Twitter handle on Sunday, said he expected that the recovery of the loot would generate appreciation rather than condemnation. He said, “Trace the history of those who are very angry now on Twitter; they are either friends, relatives or political associates of the thieves. It is simple. “One can constructively crit...

The development, it was learnt, was because the state government had yet to fulfil its promise of paying 50 per cent salaries to them as agreed in a meeting between labour unions and the government more than two weeks ago. The organised labour in the state had suspended its industrial action and accepted the government’s proposal of paying 50 per cent salaries across board with effect from February this year. The four-day-old strike was suspended on May 23, 2016, following a meeting between the Governor Seriake Dickson-led administration  and the state Joint Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress at Government House, Yenagoa. Labour had embarked on the action after the expiration of  the 21-day ultimatum it gave the government to pay ...

The bank confirmed the development in a statement through which it explained that the affected workers failed the year 2015 appraisal exercise. The statement explained that a combination of factors was taken into consideration in the annual exercise, which ranged from low productivity to disciplinary issues, adding that the affected employees were duly exited in line with the bank’s staff exit policy. The statement read in part, “The staff disengagement exercise is coming a year after the bank’s successful integration with the erstwhile Mainstreet Bank, which it acquired in October 2014; the integration exercise described by analysts as a landmark in Nigeria’s banking industry has significantly improved Skye Bank’s ICT capacity and helped strengthen the bank’s service delivery. “The bank extended its appr...

Jonathan - How we were pressured to squander $18bn excess crude saving

Image
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has spoken out about how the excess crude oil revenue account, which stood at over $20 billion at the inception of his administration, was depleted to about $2 billion when he left office on May 29, 2015. Answering questions on an interview programme with Bloomberg TV, Mr. Jonathan blamed the state governors for regularly pressurizing the federal government to draw from the reserve fund to augment revenue allocations from the federation account. “At any time the earnings (from oil) drop, the governors would insist that there is no place in our laws that actually say that the federal government should keep the reserve,” Mr. Jonathan said. “They always insisted that a part of it (excess crude revenue account) should be brought.” He said there had always been misconception about the excess crude account, pointing out that while a number of people felt it was a reserve fund for the rainy day, others said it was fund that could be drawn from in ti...
