A ‎Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered a former Governor of Imo State, Mr. Ikedi Ohakim, to open his defence to debunk the charges of money laundering instituted against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Justice Adeniyi Ademola made this order in a ruling on Thursday after dismissing the no-case submission filed by the former governor who had claimed that the evidence led by the prosecution to prove its case had disclosed no prima facie case against him. The EFCC on July 8, 2015, arraigned Ohakim who was Imo State Governor between 2007 and 2011, on three counts of money laundering. The prosecution accused Ohakim of purchasing a property at 60, Kwame Nkrumah Street, Plot No 1098, Cadastral ZoneA04, Asokoro District, Abuja with cash payment of $2.29m which was said to be dollar equivalent of N270m in November 2008. The Lagos State Government has clarified the misconception surrounding the unfortunate incident where a street hawker was knocked down by an oncoming truck at Maryland Bus Stop on Wednesday. The street hawker, who was trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), had attempted to cross the road before being hit by the truck, which was erroneously thought to be a BRT Bus. As a result, hoodlums armed with sticks and stones, immediately descended on some BRT buses plying the route as at the time of the incident and in the process destroyed several of the BRT buses.       A street hawker lost his life yesterday afternoon while being chased by Kick Against Indiscipline officials (KAI) along Ikorodu road in Maryland. According to eyewitnesses, the KAI officials making an attempt to enforce the law, chased a man hawking along Maryland bridge. The US government's new proposal to curb terrorism involves snooping around social media accounts of foreign travelers. A legal practitioner, Mr. Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, has filed a notice at the Federal High Court in Abuja to discontinue the suit he instituted seeking the disqualification of President Muhammadu Buhari for lack of certificate. Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe had alleged that Buhari was not qualified to aspire for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because he did not sit for the Cambridge West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1961 as he claimed. The notice of discontinuance dated June 27 and obtained by THISDAY, read: “Take note that the plaintiff in this originating summons, Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, hereby discontinues this action.” THISDAY checks revealed that following the withdrawal of the suit from court, the trial judge, Justice Ademola Adeniyi will today sit and accordingly strike out the case. The new N30 billion now increases the payment made by the South African firm on the fine till date to N80 billion, after an earlier N50 billion paid on February 24, which was done in ‘Good Faith.’ Meanwhile, NCC has confirmed receipt of the additional N30 billion from MTN. a Lebanese and bureau de change operator, Aly Sayad, has been accused of absconding with $487,700 (about N170m)  in the Victoria Island area of Lagos State. It was learnt that three businessmen had approached the suspect in his office on Idowu Taylor Street, Victoria Island, to help them change $487,700 to naira. He was alleged to have left the men in the office after collecting the money, saying he was going to the bank to transfer the naira equivalent to their various bank accounts. After waiting for hours, the victims were said to have gone to the bank where Sayad claimed he was going to do the transaction, but could not find him. He was alleged to have fled with the money. The case was reported at the Bar Beach Police Division, where a manhunt was launched for the suspect. ELEVEN men suspected to be fake naval officers have been arrested in Rivers State The suspects were said to have been parading themselves as navy personnel with different ranks before they were apprehended around the Rukpokwu Police checkpoint. The outgoing Commander NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Sanusi Ibrahim, who disclosed this on Wednesday while handing over the suspects to the Rivers Police Command, explained that they (suspects) disguised as “merchant navy” with the aim of defrauding the public and some companies in the state. Pandemonium struck at the Ekuigbo community of Ughelli-North Local Government Area of Delta State on Wednesday after a suspected rapist was set ablaze. The suspect was reportedly among the hoodlums who attacked a 22-year-old sales girl where she sold fish feed and gang raped her into coma on Monday. The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command on Sunday arrested seven hoodlums at the Ejigbo area and two pickpockets at the Mile 2/Maryland axis. While the seven suspects were arrested in a street fight, the two other pickpockets were picked up after they had successfully removed three phones from commuters in different Bus Transit Rapid (BRT) buses. The Federal Government is to consult with beneficiaries and other concerned parties on the restructuring and refocusing of the multi-billion Naira Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWin) programme, with the objective of injecting new ideas for its sustainability, the finance ministry has said. The programme, initiated by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 as part of the government’s job creation initiatives, provides grants to about 1200 people to start small businesses each year. It also made provisions for the training of entrepreneurs. A statement from the ministry said 18, 000 young entrepreneurs were trained in various aspects of Small and Medium Enterprises management and business skills; and 3, 900 of them, including 1, 200 women, were each given non-repayable take-off grants for businesses of their choice ranging from N1 million up to a maximum of N10 million. A man tried to set fire to an Air France plane at Sierra Leone’s biggest airport after gaining access to the aircraft without a passport or boarding card, a court heard Tuesday. Airport officials promised security would be stepped up after Ibrahim Kanu attempted to board the flight armed with petrol, matches and a cigarette lighter on June 24 at Lungi International Airport, close to the capital of Freetown.
