20 soldiers face court martial over murder and illegal sales of firearms.

Today, the Nigerian Army set up a General Court Martial to try 20 soldiers involved in criminal activities which include murder, crimes against civilians, and illegal sales of firearms in the ongoing counter insurgency warfare in the Northeast.

A court martial of the Nigerian Army has begun the trial of 20 officers and men for various offences, ranging from murder, gun-running to misconduct in the line of duty in Borno State.

This was disclosed on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, shortly after the inauguration of the court martial.

Brig. Gen. Victor Ezugwu, acting General Officer Commanding, 7 Division, Nigerian Army, which is concentrated in Borno State to combat Boko Haram terrorism under the code-name “Operation Lafiya Dole”, shortly after the court was established, noted that “the court martial is to achieve timely and quick dispensation of justice within the framework provided in relevant statute books.”

“It important that both the prosecution and the accused persons or their counsel are mindful of this fact and strive to shun all forms of antics such as request for frivolous adjournments, which could lead to delays in the trial process.

“It is often said in legal parlance that justice delayed is justice denied,” he said.

The court, presided over by Brig.-Gen. Adeniyi, promised a fair and speedy trial.

Adeniyi said, “I must assured all, especially the accused, that they have nothing to fear; we are going to be fair to all of them.

“Be guided by the Constitution and all other military laws. We would be fair and just. There are higher courts where the judgement here can be appealed.

“You have the right for legal representation.

“We are not going to allow for any unnecessary delay, justice delayed, they say, is justice denied.”

Oduah - EFCC didn’t find N2.5bn In My Maid’s Account

The member representing Anambra North Senatorial District in the upper chamber, Senator Stella Oduah, has described as false and malicious, an on-line media report which alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, discovered N2.5bn in the bank account of one of her maids. Oduah, in a statement by her media aide,  Francisca Onyeisi, and made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Monday, maintained that the report was a mere figment of the reporter’s imagination.
