Portugal Wins Euro 2016, Beating France By 1 - 0...

Image
In the end, Cristiano Ronaldo had his winner’s medal, even if it was not the way the great showman had intended. Portugal, the team that finished third in their group, had found a way even on a night when their greatest player left the pitch on a stretcher. The players of France were on their knees and, on the far touchline, Ronaldo could be seen trying to make sense of an extraordinary story and take in all the contrasting emotions. Ronaldo’s damaged knee might have been a grievous setback but Portugal refused to let it be the decisive factor. They gave everything to keep out France during those long passages when they were put under pressure and, ultimately, Éder’s decisive goal in the second period of extra time won a test of endurance. Their run of 10 successive defeats to France, stretching back to 1975, is over and they can reflect on the greatest achievement in the history of their national team. Their tactics will not appeal to everyone but nobody could possibly disp...

Redeemed female pastor murdered in Abuja

A forty-two-year-old mother of seven and an assistant pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Mrs Eunice Elisha, was in the early hours of Saturday murdered by assailants, while preaching around Gbazango-West area of Kubwa in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Eunice, an indigene of Ekiti State, was a Deaconess at the Divine Touch Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Old NEPA Road, Phase 4, Kubwa, Abuja. Speaking to newsmen, the husband of the slain woman, Mr. Olawale Elisha, said his wife had gone out to preach in the neighbourhood in her usual practice at about 5am on the fateful day only for him to hear the report of her murder. Narrating the incident, he said: “My wife always goes out early in the morning on ‘Morning Cry’ to preach. There was a particular day she went out and she told me that there is a mosque at the back where they commented about what she said. So, I just warned. This morning, she wen...

Femi Adesina - 'People complaining of hardship are in the minority'

Image
Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, says people who are complaining of hardship are in the minority. Adesina reportedly said this while speaking in a telephone interview with 100.1FM Abuja. “Yes, you need to give me the statistics of those complaining. We (government officials) are in the midst of the people and we can feel the pulse of the people. I maintain that the people who are complaining are in the minority. I can tell you that the support base of this government is still enormous. Yes, we know some people are complaining but, they are still in the minority”he said I do not want to believe he said this, and even if he did am sure he meant *Majority* and was misquoted.

Church leaders warn lawmakers on Sharia bill

Image
Nigeria’s secularity must be faithfully guarded to ensure stability and progress, senior clergymen warned yesterday. They pointedly told the House of Representatives not to pass into law the Sharia Bill pending before it. If passed into law, the bill will empower Sharia Courts to try non-Muslims, including Christians in criminal cases. They also noted that Christian Religious Studies (CRS) as a subject in school curricula was increasingly being treated with disdain and in some cases expunged amid lopsided federal appointments in favour of moslems. Rising from the 111th general meeting of the church council in Takum Local Council of Taraba State, the leadership of the Christian Reformed Church-Nigeria (CRC-N), in a communique observed the said bill with dismay, saying it was aimed at igniting religious upheaval in the country. Also, a pro-democracy on-governmental organization, Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA) has accused the minister of Interior Affairs,...
