Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday said despite the current harsh economic conditions in the country, there was hope for Nigeria. According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, Osinbajo gave the assurance while granting audience to a delegation of the Muslim Lawyers Association at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The vice-president cited the N500bn Social Investment Programme already provided for in the 2016 budget as one of the strategies put in place by the present administration to energise the economy and deal with poverty. “We are here at this time because that is the will of God to deliver the goods and do the right things for this country. The Senate on Tuesday began the screening of the 47 ambassadorial nominees sent to it by President Muhammadu Buhari for legislative approval. Buhari had on June 9 sent to the Senate 47 names of Nigerians to be screened and confirmed as career diplomats. The President, in the letter personally signed by him and dated June 6, 2016, requested the Senate to approve the list at the shortest possible time. There was, however, drama during the exercise as some of the nominees, who were drilled by members of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs chaired by Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, could not recite the national anthem and the national pledge smoothly. The nominees were asked questions ranging from diplomatic issues to the names of the senators representing their states, their geopolitical zones and the states in them, how many local government areas in their states, how many lawmakers in the Senate, among others. An autopsy report shows that a man who claimed to have spent $100,000 on plastic surgery to look like Justin Bieber has died of drug and alcohol overdose. The 35-year-old man, Tobias Strebel, who went by the name Toby Sheldon’s body was found in a Motel in the North Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. Land grabbing is set to become a criminal offence in Lagos state as members of the State House of Assembly at its plenary yesterday July 19th, passed a bill seeking to criminalize the act. The bill which was passed after the third reading, prohibits forceful entry and illegal occupation of landed properties; violent and fraudulent conduct in relation to landed properties in Lagos State. The bill has been sent to the Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode for his assent. The Speaker of the state house of assembly, Mudashiru Obasa in his submission, stated that the passage of the bill into law will give sanction to any individual who is culpable of the offence.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has described as absurd opinions in some quarters that the anti-corruption fight of the Buhari-led government is one-sided. Osinbajo said this while speaking at the end of the African Union summit in Kigali, Rwanda on Monday July 18th. “I think it’s entirely absurd, I think that view is absurd and without foundation or basis whatsoever. We look at corruption from all possible facets. If you look at for example, corruption on the military, from military procurement, obviously the only individuals responsible for that could be persons who had held office within the period in question and that has been done and clearly the opposition was not in the office at that time. The Senator representing Lagos West Senatorial District, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday, formally reported Senator Dino Melaye to the All Progressives Congress and the Senate, alleging that Melaye would have beaten her up but for the timely intervention of her colleagues. Tinubu, the wife of the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in her separate letters, said the Kogi West Senatorial District senator actually issued threats of rape and assault against her and boasted that he would face no consequence even if he fulfilled the threats. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop shielding members of his government from probe. The governor in a statement on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said it smacked of sheer hypocrisy and nepotism for anyone to accept that fraud could have been perpetrated on procurement and award of contracts in an establishment without the involvement of the director of procurement. “It is now obvious to the entire world that anyone that is in President Buhari’s good books can never be adjudged as corrupt even if such a person is caught looting the entire money in Nigeria’s treasury,” Fayose said. “There are many petitions relating to the defence from 2007 that are been discarded, the question is why? Today, Francis Palmdeti begins, Head Of Public Affairs of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), said that foreign nationals from the African Union (AU) member states can now travel to Ghana and be issued visa on arrival. He said the arrangement would be piloted at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra for three months, and thereafter extended to all other entry points of the country. All AU nationals affected by this policy who arrive in the country must have a passport, valid for at least three months, from the date of entry, they must have a return ticket or evidence of onward travel.
