Alhaji Musa Jidawa, Executive Secretary, Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), on Wednesday, said that over 300 houses, farmlands and livestock had been destroyed by flood in Jakusko and Adaya communities. He made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu. Jidawa said, “We received report of over 250 houses destroyed in Jakusko and about 54 others in Adaya but no life was lost, the affected people are taking shelter with relations in the communities. The executive secretary added that the state government had provided food, clothes and building materials to the victims to assist them resettle. The exchange rate remained pressured last week over foreign exchange (forex) liquidity constraints, as the interbank market rates for spot trades oscillated between N312-N317.50/$ al, through the week. However, in the parallel market, the exchange rate closed flat week-on-week at N397/$, though traded as high as N393/$ earlier in the week. The naira hit all-time low of N365.25 to the dollar on Thursday at the interbank market. Already, analysts said the market will remain pressured in the interim, especially at the parallel market, until sizeable amount of forex flows into the system. Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had last week, increased the sale of forex to a single Bureau De Change operator from $30,000 to $50,000 weekly. Aero Contractors, one of Nigeria’s largest domestic airlines, is set to lay off some of its workers as its financial crisis becomes worsened. Already, the airline is in talks with aviation unions on how to cut down on the number of workers in its employ. It was gathered on Sunday that the airline, which met with officials of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria last Thursday on the issue, would continue with the meeting this week. No fewer than five people, including two children, have been confirmed dead and 13 others injured after three vehicles crashed on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos State. PUNCH Metro learnt that the accident happened at about 6pm on Sunday around the UNILAG Waterfront end of the bridge. It involved a LAGBUS, a Rover Jeep and a Hilux pickup. An official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority told our correspondent on the telephone that the accident was caused by the pickup. He explained that the driver of the truck drove at top speed and had a blowout before somersaulting. He said, “The truck driver was at top speed when he had a blowout and somersaulted. The truck crashed into the other vehicles, including the LAGBUS. In all, two vehicles somersaulted in the accident. THE Cross River State command of Nigeria Immigration Service has arrested a Cameroonian couple (names withheld by the command) with a two-week-old baby boy suspected to have been stolen.  The couple alleged that the baby was sold to them by an unidentified child trafficker in the south western part of Nigeria.  The state Comptroller of Immigration, Mrs. Funke Adeuyi, disclosed in Calabar on Saturday that the suspects were arrested on August 10 at the Nfum Control Post in Etung Local Government Area of the state by a border patrol team. Adeuyi said the suspects were arrested after the first line interrogation showed that their surnames did not tally. Adeuyi said, “After searching their travelling documents, we found out that their surnames did not tally. They also claimed to have been married for 15 years. At least six persons have been feared dead and several others injured in a blood spilling clash between the indigenes of Akowa in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo state and Hausa people living in the community. The incident which occurred during the evening hours Friday, has led to the lost of properties, burning of the community and people deserting their locality in the process . According to reports, an Hausa man had ran amuck killing two indigenes and equally taking his own life thereafter. A fire outbreak on Thursday night destroyed goods and property worth millions of naira at Balm of Gilead Specialist Hospital and Marketing Centre, Ilesa, Osun. The fire which started around 9 p.m lasted for about three hours before it was put off by firemen and good Samaritans. Prof. Alexander Owolabi, a Consultant Gynaecologist at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife, who owns the hospital attributed the fire outbreak to electrical high voyage. Owolabi expressed dissatisfaction on poor service of the fire service, adding that unavailability of good fire fighter vehicle, scarcity of diesel and water among others contributed to the total loss of the whole resident. He appealed to governments to provide adequate and functional fire fighter vehicles, sufficient diesel, water and other necessary materials used to quench fire outbreak in the interest of the citizenry. Five persons have been declared missing after Enwhe and Igbide communities of Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta state clashed over a disputed plot of land. The Punch gathered that a woman with six and half month-old pregnancy was also shot dead during the fracas. It was gathered that the five missing persons comprising three women and two men had not been seen by their relatives since last Monday fracas. Nigeria’s hope of being certified Polio-free by the World Health Organisation (WHO), next year, might have been dashed, as two new cases have been reported. Health authorities in Abuja have, however, remained silent, with key officials refusing to be quoted. The two cases of Wild Polio Virus (WPV) were discovered in Gwarzo and Jere LGAs of Borno State, yesterday. A top health official said the country has decided to term it a ‘suspicion’, while it seeks the best approach to break the news to the public. It was learnt WHO could announce the development at a press conference in Geneva tomorrow. Last month, July 24, Nigeria celebrated two years without any new case of Polio because the last known infection was in July 2014. It is uncertain how the WHO will handle the resurgence. Woman flees after dumping her child at the Assemblies of God church, Obudu, Cross River state. . . The baby was discovered at the church premises around 2:30pm on August 4, 2016, after the mother, Monica, had reportedly collected N1,000 from Francis Agianpuye, the reverend in charge of the church, some days earlier. . . Agianpuye said he discovered the child who had been abandoned with some clothes in a bag, and had sent some youths to go in search of the mother. When they couldn’t find the child’s mother, he made the decision to take the matter to the police. . . Armed robbers have shot dead a cashier, identified only as Genesis, in the Ilupeju area of Lagos State. PUNCH Metro learnt that Genesis, a cashier with a plastics company in the Ilupeju Industrial Estate, was shot dead last Wednesday while he was heading for a bank with his colleagues’ salaries. Our correspondent gathered that Genesis was shot three times by the gunmen, who also injured the company’s driver. The matter was said to have been reported at the Ilupeju Police Division which removed Genesis’ corpse. A source in the company said the robbers, however, could not take away the money with the cashier before they escaped. He said, “The incident happened in the morning. The news came as a shock to all of us. The deceased is in his early 30s. Though attempts have been made to assure Nigerians that there are no plans to increase the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly referred to as petrol, The PUNCH has gathered that the actual price at which the product should sell at filling stations is N151.87 per litre. This “realistic” price is more than the maximum N145 per litre fixed by the Federal Government on May 11, 2016 when it liberalised the downstream oil sector, marketers with knowledge of the market and the pricing mechanism told one of our correspondents on Tuesday. This, they said, was basically due to the continued scarcity of the United States dollar, adding that the true price of petrol was N151.87 litre, judging by the current ex-depot price of the commodity. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta says it has been vindicated by the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers’ allegation that former President Goodluck Jonathan is a grand patron of new militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers. MEND claimed in a statement on Tuesday that Jonathan was sponsoring the NDA to destabilise the government of his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari. The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a robbery suspect, Olawale Olabinwonu, while attempting to sell a stolen vehicle. Olabinwonu, an administrative officer of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad while trying to sell a Nissan Sentra, 2015 model. The vehicle, whose number plate was changed, had been placed on an online shopping platform, where it was advertised for sale. Police investigators had, on seeing the advert, called the contact on the website to indicate interest. A man, who took custody of the car where it was parked in the Lekki area of the state, was said to have been arrested. The suspect, however, denied ownership of the car and subsequently led detectives to Olabinwonu’s residence.
